Overview

This unit is designed to provide an introduction to the fundamental principles of managing business organisations. It will allow for the critical exploration of management concepts, models and contexts using a case-based approach. While working in teams, you will learn how to apply management theory and research evidence in analysing and creatively solving real-life management problems. You will also learn how to critically and ethically evaluate managerial decisions while considering the organisation's context in a culturally diverse and internationalised world. The unit draws upon a range of academic, practical and pop cultural sources to engage you in authentic ways of learning about management.

Learning outcomes

  1. explain fundamental concepts, models and approaches that represent the theory of management
  2. FIRST SEMESTER: using a case-based approach, apply management theory and research evidence to practical situations and create solutions that benefit people, organisations, communities and/or the environment SECOND SEMESTER: apply management theory and research evidence to practical situations using a case-based approach

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
