Overview
Effective communication is at the heart of successful management. This unit examines how interpersonal communication shapes workplace relationships, team dynamics, and organisational outcomes. You will engage with contemporary communication theory and apply it to real-world management contexts - from navigating difficult conversations to resolving conflict to building persuasive arguments and leading collaborative problem-solving. A core focus is developing self-awareness as a communicator: understanding personal strengths and weaknesses, and building a deliberate practice of professional growth.

Learning outcomes
- explain key theories and concepts of interpersonal communication in contemporary organisational settings
- analyse how communication practices influence management outcomes in leadership, decision-making, and conflict resolution
- evaluate personal communication strengths and areas for development using relevant communication frameworks
- construct persuasive messages using appropriate structure, evidence, professional communication convention using relevant digital technologies
- collaborate effectively in teams to communicate solutions to management challenges in professional settings
- demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
