Overview

Business communication in the 21 st century continues to be the means through which work is allocated, coordinated, and successfully completed. Skills in communication remain at the forefront of what employers are looking for in job candidates. In MGB2200 you will learn about communication and the necessary skills required to successfully communicate in professional contexts. You will learn about practical organisational communication theory, informative and persuasive communication, the relationship between verbal and non-verbal communication, self-awareness and interpersonal skills, diversity and communication, team communication, presentation skills, technology and communication, and effective written communication including job seeking. You will be provided the opportunity to develop and demonstrate communication skills to secure employment and work in modern organisations through a dynamic practical tutorial programme, using technologies, case studies, experiential learning, and assessment tasks to build job- ready skills.

Learning outcomes

  1. critically evaluate communication theories and concepts and their application to ethical business communication
  2. develop creative solutions to communication challenges within contemporary, and diverse organisational contexts
  3. prepare and deliver effective professional business presentations for different business purposes and audiences
  4. effectively use currently available technologies for business communication
  5. write professionally for a range of business purposes including job seeking, report writing, emails, memos, and social media for business
  6. demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
