The overall aim of this unit is to introduce you to the range of activities associated with the role of management, specifically of the organisation, teams, individuals and self. In order to achieve this aim, the unit content will cover several key areas of management including current challenges facing managers in a turbulent and unpredictable external environment, the importance of teamwork, leadership, communication and effective decision making. Finally, the unit explores contemporary management issues, such as ethics, sustainability and the future of work. By undertaking this unit, you should expect to experience a variety of activities designed to challenge your thinking about contemporary management theory and practice. These activities will include interactive case studies and application of the theory to 'real' world examples through team presentations.

Learning outcomes
- identify, analyse and apply contemporary management theory and research to current organisational issues
- identify techniques, models and frameworks for adapting organisations internal environment to today's turbulent and unpredictable, external environment
- identify and apply theories and models of team effectiveness in organisations
- critically examine your own behaviour as a future leader and manager, identifying approaches for improving communication and people management skills
- identify and engage with contemporary management issues, including ethical approaches to managing
- demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
