Overview

This unit provides an overview of the strategic, economic, political and legal environment in which business operates at the global level. It considers the role that individuals, organisations and governments play in the operation of the market both domestically and internationally. The focus of this unit will be to investigate the political economy of the contemporary world and the context that underpins managerial decision making. To this end, you will examine the myriad of global and domestic issues challenging the pursuit of sustainable business practice as a precursor to more specific units that help inform the management of business operations.

Learning outcomes

1. gain a preliminary overview of the economic, legal, political and social environment in which business operations are managed
2. illustrate the interaction that takes place among individuals, organisations, and governments in determining business outcomes
3. facilitate an understanding of the role of globalisation in relation to the growth and interdependency of economies
4. understand how technological disruption and innovation allow for the development of capabilities that provide value for business
5. assess the need for business to be ethical and socially responsible
6. apply critical thinking to case-based analysis
7. demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
