Basic introduction to research design in management; types of research designs; qualitative and quantitative data collection and measurement techniques; coding data; reliability and validity; qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis; interpreting and discussing results; structuring and writing the research report; integrating individual research into overall management literature.

Learning outcomes

  1. understand the different stages in the research process
  2. critically analyse and interpret basic research designs in the management discipline
  3. understand the different qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques used to answer research questions in the management discipline
  4. develop academic writing skills appropriate to the discipline for reporting on management research projects
  5. understand the ethical issues involved in conducting management research
  6. demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
