Overview

In this unit, you will further develop your midwifery knowledge and skills related to working with women throughout normal and complex labour and birth, as well as the postnatal assessment and care of the woman and newborn. You will be able to recognise variations from normal, and describe and practise the appropriate interventions for common emergency situations during labour/birth and the early postnatal period. Additionally, you will explore the impact of contemporary birthing options and practices for women, including culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe and apply the midwifery scope of practice when working with women, with a focus on providing culturally safe and inclusive care.
  2. Examine and explain variations from normal across pregnancy, labour/birth and the postnatal period, and the associated assessment and management of these.
  3. Demonstrate midwifery knowledge, skills and responsibilities related to fetal surveillance in the antenatal period and throughout labour/birth.
  4. Critique the impact of the cascade of intervention on perinatal outcomes within a collaborative framework.
  5. Discuss compassionate midwifery care for women and their families experiencing pregnancy loss and explain effective collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.
  6. Examine and explain the pharmacotherapeutics and use of medicines in pregnancy, labour/birth and the postnatal period.
  7. Explain the role and responsibility of the midwife in supporting and educating women with complex lactation issues.
  8. Demonstrate beginning level competence based upon the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife standards for practice and Code of conduct for midwives, and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) International Code of Ethics for Midwives.

Workload

7 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, seminars and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
