Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
This unit introduces the fundamental principles of stress, strain, and deformation in solid materials subjected to axial, transverse, torsional, and bending loads. You will develop skills to analyse and design structural elements such as shafts and beams using free-body diagrams, shear-force and bending moment diagrams, and stress transformations. You will also build capability in solving statically determinate and indeterminate problems, and in applying failure criteria to assess the safety of structures under load.

Learning outcomes
- Calculate stresses and deformations in structural members under axial, torsional, and bending loads using fundamental principles of mechanics.
- Analyse the state of stress in three-dimensional structures subjected to combined loading conditions using appropriate engineering reasoning and methods.
- Formulate well-reasoned written engineering analyses, including workings, diagrams, and calculations, in a manner appropriate to the professional engineering context.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
