Overview

This unit introduces you to the fundamental concepts and methods of data analysis, with an emphasis on organising, summarising, and interpreting data for business and management applications. You will develop skills in descriptive statistics, probability, and basic data handling, and will learn to apply Excel for data organisation, visualisation, and simple analysis. By the end of the unit, you will be able to collect and summarise data, calculate and interpret key statistical measures, and perform introductory probability and survey analysis, providing a strong foundation for more advanced statistical techniques in Year 2.

Learning outcomes

1. classify and describe types, sources, and levels of data, and organise them using appropriate tables, charts, and Excel tools
2. design a simple questionnaire and conduct a survey to collect and summarise business data using descriptive statistics
3. apply basic probability and conditional probability rules to solve simple business-related problems
4. interpret and analyse business data through hypothesis testing and regression analysis to support decision-making.
