Overview

Concepts & practice of occupational health and safety management systems within work environments, including the conduct of an audit are examined. Includes accident/incident causation theories and models, investigative techniques, reporting & statistics, safety systems, fire prevention & control. Incident causation and accident types, including slips, trips and falls are also examined.

Assessment in this unit includes hurdle assessment tasks. Failure of any hurdle assessment task may result in failure of the unit..

Learning outcomes

1. Evaluate the theoretical underpinnings and models of best practice for safety management in the workplace;
2. Develop a Safety Management System and a Safety Management Plan for the workplace;
3. Apply the essential elements required of a Safety Management System which complies with relevant legislation, and;
4. Demonstrate how to communicate with organisations about planning and implementing Safety Management Systems.

Workload

6 hours off campus, self-directed learning per week, 4 hours teacher directed learning per week, plus 20 contact hours over 3 block days.
