Overview

The unit will provide you the opportunity for integration of advanced health assessment skills, and application of evidence-based practice and ethical principles in the management of complex nursing situations in simulated and actual clinical settings. You will be introduced to the nursing management of patients with complex and/or life threatening health problems. Pathophysiology, pharmacology, and healthcare interventions will be critically evaluated in the context of complex healthcare issues. You will develop clinical judgement skills through the translation of knowledge involving the management of the deteriorating patient.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply pathophysiological concepts to patients with complex and/or life threatening illness
  2. Identify and implement response systems for the deteriorating patient in the clinical setting
  3. Explain use of appropriate therapeutic medications in the patient with complex and/or life threatening illness
  4. Identify, analyse and resolve clinical concerns in the patient with complex and/or life threatening illness
  5. Develop and implement patient-centred care appropriate to the diverse needs and wishes of the patient and their family/carer
  6. Undertake complex nursing activities in a range of health settings, and apply appropriate principles of prioritising and time management appropriate to the clinical setting
  7. Critically evaluate judgements made in the performance of informed patient care
  8. Practice with increasing independence in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Professional Standards for the Registered Nurse, Code of ethics and Code of professional conduct for nurses

Workload

8 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, clinical learning environment and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
