Overview

In this unit you will continue to build your knowledge and skills in the areas of acute medical-surgical nursing. Within the unit, you will learn about caring for a range of health conditions where multiple body systems may be affected and you will apply this to planning and delivering person-centered care. The role of the nurse in caring for various patients will be a particular focus of this unit, allowing you to further enhance your practice, build autonomy and further develop communication skills in this particular area. The knowledge and skills gained within this unit, will enable you to practice in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice, Code of Conduct for Nurses, and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Code of Ethics for Nurses.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically distinguish established knowledge of pathophysiology and its relevance to particular body systems
  2. Critically analyse relevant patient data and implement clinical reasoning to determine the appropriate steps required to provide adequate care
  3. Generate evidence-based plans of care, which are based on existing knowledge and clinical reasoning and that assess and support patients in an acute care setting
  4. Establish knowledge of the patient's condition(s) and pharmacology, to ensure safe and relevant administration of medications
  5. Demonstrate practice at a beginning level in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice, Code of Conduct for Nurses, and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Code of Ethics for Nurses

Workload

14 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, clinical learning environment, interprofessional learning and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
