Overview

In this unit you will focus on mental health nurses most foundational forms of communication. The unit will focus on your capacity to be fully present, actively and appreciatively listen, reflexively understand, and sensitively explore your interactions and conversations with service users and their carers and families. You will learn to enhance counselling microskills, expand therapeutic communication and tolerate uncertainty in everyday clinical practice.

Learning outcomes

  1. Analyse the fundamental principles of helping relationships in mental health nursing practice
  2. Demonstrate and justify counselling microskills to engage and support mental health service users
  3. Examine the therapeutic use of self when working with mental health service users
  4. Argue the need for mental health nurses to adopt a not-knowing perspective, suspending their professional and personal beliefs to understand the point of view of mental health service users
  5. Critique your own clinical work through reflective practice.

Workload

12 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
