This unit builds upon the foundations established in unit NUR5016 and extends your knowledge of advanced cancer nursing care using an evidence-based approach. This unit will prepare you to provide advanced care to cancer patients, symptom management and end of life care. The role of the specialist cancer nurse in the multidisciplinary team is examined including clinical leadership. You will learn about effective communication and therapeutic relationships with patient groups and families. This unit will cover topics such as cancer nursing for diverse communities and priority populations and transitions in care for people living with cancer.

Learning outcomes
- Perform clinically at a minimum required standard, in accordance with the National Cancer Nursing Education Project (EdCaN) ANMC Competency Standards for Registered Nurses – cancer control
- Analyse the determinants of health impacting people affected by cancer including priority populations and diverse communities
- Apply complex care planning and ongoing requirements for people with cancer
- Critically appraise multidisciplinary team communication and team leadership in cancer care
- Plan effective transitions in care across different care programs and settings for people with cancer
- Evaluate symptom management in palliative and end of life care for patients and families
- Analyse legal and ethical issues in palliative and end of life care for people living with cancer
- Communicate knowledge and skills associated with the care of people with cancer to others in a professional and empathetic manner
Workload
12 credit point unit = 288 total hours per semester 24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed study, including workshops and online activities
