This unit introduces you to advanced symptom management in palliative and end of life care. Working with patients in the palliative and end of life phase of illness requires specific knowledge and skills to manage complex symptoms and support quality patient outcomes. This unit will prepare you to understand complex symptoms from different types of health conditions, and provide palliative and end of life care in complex care situations. You will develop the skills to lead interdisciplinary teams and support the patient and their carers to achieve the desired outcomes. These functions require advanced knowledge and skills in symptom management, advanced therapeutics (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) and leadership.

Learning outcomes
- Examine complex issues associated with delivery of holistic palliative and end of life care in a variety of health care contexts
- Identify management challenges in malignant and end stage chronic illness
- Identify complex palliative and end of life care needs of priority populations
- Develop support strategies for building capability in health professionals and inter-professional teams to manage and support end of life care in your area of practice
- Analyse effective therapeutic medication management in palliative and end of life care
- Apply palliative care leadership strategies in your area of practice
Workload
