Overview

Medical surgical nursing requires specialised skills and understanding of clinical leadership, management, and patient care. You will develop skills to care for medical surgical patients using a patient-centred approach incorporating effective health promotion and health education strategies. Your study will include key factors associated with the management of medical surgical patients, stabilisation, and management of the seriously ill or deteriorating patients. You will examine the role of nurses in different contexts of medical surgical nursing including ethical considerations when working with patients and the interdisciplinary team.

Learning outcomes

  1. Plan, deliver and evaluate advanced medical surgical nursing practice to manage patients with complex disease states.
  2. Evaluate clinical information to assess and manage patient deterioration for optimal patient outcomes.
  3. Implement and evaluate end of life care to patients and families from diverse communities.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion, health literacy and health education strategies for a range of medical surgical conditions
  5. Evaluate complex care planning of medical surgical patients from different populations.
  6. Implement effective quality transitions in care for complex medical surgical patients between various levels of care and different health, aged care and social services.
  7. Facilitate effective communication and advanced nursing leadership and management for medical surgical patients of different populations as per registered nurse standards.

Workload
