Overview
This unit will enable you to apply the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the therapeutic management of medication within advanced nursing practice. Examining your role as a designated registered nurse prescriber in therapeutic medication management, you will learn to apply the legal, ethical and professional accountabilities for which you are responsible within your scope of practice, and within the context of relevant frameworks and Australian funding models for prescribing. You will also apply knowledge and skills to safely and proficiently prescribe medications within the Australian healthcare system and your scope of practice as a designated registered nurse prescriber, in partnership with an authorised health professional.

- Apply the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the management of medication.
- Examine the therapeutic effects of commonly prescribed medications on major body systems.
- Critique how the quality use of medicines framework principles are used in clinical decision making within the scope of practice of a designated registered nurse prescriber.
- Evaluate the implications of the social, cultural, environmental, and political factors influencing the use of medications on health outcomes.
- Apply the legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities in medication prescribing according to state, territory and federal legislation, within the scope of practice of a designated registered nurse prescriber.
- Design safe, evidence-based medication management plans within the scope of practice of a designated registered nurse prescriber.
- Distinguish your ongoing role as a safe and proficient designated registered nurse prescriber of medications in the Australian healthcare system.
Workload
