Overview

Supporting individuals in maintaining optimal health is central to the role of nurses and midwives. Achieving this requires planning and implementing targeted health education strategies, based on health education theories and tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual. This unit explores advanced concepts in health education, emphasising a health-promoting perspective within health care professional practice. You will critically engage with health education theories, principles and strategies, and examine their role in enhancing health outcomes across diverse populations. Emphasising person-centred care, you will learn to design comprehensive health education plans that reflect an understanding of the individual's unique health requirements, preferences, and circumstances.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critique health education theories, principles and practices from a health promoting perspective.
  2. Analyse behavioural change theory from the perspective of sustainable change and complex psycho-social situations.
  3. Examine the relationship between determinants of health, health education and health outcomes.
  4. Determine health education practice approaches to address individual needs.
  5. Design a person-centred health education plan.

Workload

12 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self directed study, including tutorials and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
