Overview

This unit focuses on equipping emergency nurses with a knowledge base and skill set essential for proficient patient assessment and management in the emergency department. In this unit, you will apply your understanding of disease processes to assess and manage patients presenting to the emergency department. Through a combination of study days, self-directed learning, and clinical practice, you will build a specialist knowledge base, skill set and interpersonal competencies so you can confidently react to urgent situations and navigate high-pressure scenarios as a specialist emergency nurse.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply knowledge of the pathophysiological processes underpinning complex disease states.
  2. Interpret age specific assessment data to prioritise therapeutic interventions for patients experiencing complex disease states.
  3. Distinguish culturally relevant emergency care practices to manage complex illness and injuries across the lifespan within an emergency department.
  4. Formulate, implement and review appropriate therapeutic interventions for patients experiencing complex disease states, inclusive of their psychological and psychosocial needs.
  5. Assess the needs of the patient’s significant others and utilise appropriate resources to address them effectively.
  6. Explore and evaluate evidence-based research underpinning emergency nursing care and identify appropriate resources to support emergency nursing practice.
  7. Practice preparedness in response to mass casualty events utilising the department's emergency guidelines.
  8. Communicate advanced emergency nursing knowledge effectively and demonstrate professionalism in the emergency department.

Workload
