Overview

This unit will support you to develop a greater understanding of pathophysiological processes underpinning health assessment data. You will also extend your knowledge of how medications impact pathophysiological processes and how to use this knowledge in an advanced practice setting. The focus on pathophysiological processes will be accompanied by use of critical thinking and clinical reasoning conducive to problem solving in the context of clinical practice.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically discuss the impact of genetics, epigenetics, inflammation and the ageing process on transition from healthy function to clinically complex disease states.
  2. Analyse changes in physiological parameters for diseased states and determine subsequent clinical interventions.
  3. Explain assessment data to prioritise safe and quality patient care in a specialty area of practice, using the core pathophysiological processes.
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking skills and clinical decision process in applying core concepts of pathophysiological and pharmacological knowledge in a specialty area of practice.
  5. Use correct scientific terminology to discuss clinical presentations, assessment data and evaluation of interventions in the context of pathophysiology.

Workload

12 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, simulations and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
