Overview

The emergency nurse requires diverse knowledge, skills and leadership capabilities to appropriately assess and manage patients effectively in the emergency department. This advanced emergency nursing unit builds upon your understanding of disease processes (pathophysiology) which underpin the assessment and contemporary emergency management of acute illness and injury states in the emergency department. The unit will prepare you to provide an advanced level of evidence-based care to emergency patients from all age groups with diverse socio-demographic characteristics.

Learning outcomes

  1. Synthesise knowledge of the pathophysiological processes underpinning complex disease and injury states.
  2. Interpret age specific assessment data to prioritise and apply therapeutic interventions for paediatric patients experiencing complex disease states.
  3. Analyse culturally relevant emergency care practices to manage complex illness and injuries across the lifespan within an emergency department.
  4. Synthesise and apply knowledge of the principles and management of ventilation in any age group in the emergency department.
  5. Apply legal and ethical frameworks related to the nursing management of critically ill patients.
  6. Critique evidence-based research underpinning emergency nursing care and complex interventions.
  7. Apply independently the Australasian Triage Scale to patients presenting to the emergency department.
  8. Practice and exemplify leadership as an emergency nurse.

Workload

24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self directed study, including tutorials and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
