Overview

In this unit, you will extend your scope of practice in the pre-hospital environment as you explore a range of diseases and conditions and learn how to manage their consequences in out-of-hospital situations. You will apply practical skills and knowledge that prepare you for potential extended care roles in diverse settings, including communities and workplaces, both locally and internationally.

Learning outcomes

  1. Evaluate a range of local and international disease aetiologies and epidemiologies that may impact on a community setting and the role which out of hospital professionals play in addressing these diseases.
  2. Analyse and apply the practices of advanced prescribing, health promotion, health assessment, discharge planning and a range of treatment schedules using an evidence-based approach.
  3. Determine clinical presentations, signs, symptoms and treatments associated with various ailments, diseases and conditions commonly encountered in the community practice settings.
  4. Recognise risk factors for disease or injury, while using appropriate screening tools to be able to triage patients to remain in their home, refer to general practice or other appropriate health services.
  5. Develop strategies targeted at leadership and education to inform change in models of paramedic practice to meet evolving community needs.

Workload

A combination of online lecture, workshops, practicals and online activities (6 hour per week), and self-directed study (6 hour per week).
