The unit consolidates your knowledge of paramedic management of pre-hospital emergencies introduced in previous clinical units. The unit addresses a wide range of clinical presentations previously introduced to you and examines the impact that patient history and comorbidities may play. You will examine how various life states such as the paediatric, geriatric and bariatric affect paramedic care. This unit will prepare you for the transition from undergraduate to graduate paramedic practice.

Learning outcomes
- Examine the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of acute and chronic conditions commonly affecting special population groups
- Evaluate and recommend appropriate prehospital interventions to complex patients within dynamic environments
- Consolidate knowledge of paramedic practice and apply that knowledge to patients with complex medical histories or life states
- Analyse the complexities of different working environments, including rural and remote practice and how care to these populations is delivered
- Demonstrate clinical reasoning and decision making skills expected of a graduate paramedic.
Workload
On-campus: A combination of online lecture, tutorials, practicals and online activities (6 hours per week), and self-directed study (6 hours per week).
