Overview

In this unit you will integrate knowledge from your study of the primary health care environment and extend your skills in both emergency and community-based primary health care to support your transition to the workplace. You will review the professional capabilities required of a paramedic, including ethical practice, safe and competent clinical care, communication, teamwork, leadership, and patient safety. You will be encouraged to reflect on your personal strengths and clinical experiences to build professional behaviours and support continual improvement. Learning will be applied through simulations and workplace placements to enhance your readiness for practice as a proficient practitioner.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate as proficient practitioner a person-centred, evidence-based approach to the clinical assessment and care of patients.
  2. Demonstrate as a proficient practitioner the knowledge, skills and attributes required for safe and competent paramedic practice.
  3. Synthesize the Paramedicine Board of Australia Professional Standards and the shared Code of Conduct to propose strategies to enable ethical practice in paramedicine.
  4. Integrate communication, leadership, inter-professional and teamwork behaviours to deliver quality patient care.
  5. Evaluate approaches to clinical risk management and patient safety in diverse simulated and healthcare settings.
  6. Demonstrate a culturally sensitive approach to personal reactions and those of patients and their families or carers to acute or chronic illness and or injury;

Workload

Throughout the study period you will attend 4 scenario days and complete 28 placement days of eight to ten hours duration in metro and/or rural locations.
