Overview

Family violence is a social issue with significant physical, financial, emotional and resource costs for individuals and communities. In this unit you will be introduced to contemporary knowledge and theories informing our current understanding of family violence and critically examine how family violence impacts upon a diverse range of individuals. You will also learn about current family violence legislation and policy, and some of the key approaches to assess and support responses to family violence. Throughout the unit you will be encouraged to critically reflect upon your personal views, values and assumptions about family violence.

Learning outcomes

  1. Explore the diverse nature of family violence lived/lived experiences for individuals and communities.
  2. Engage in self-reflective practice to evaluate your personal views, values and assumptions about family violence.
  3. Analyse the gendered drivers and reinforcing factors associated with family violence through the lens of key theoretical positions and practice-based frameworks.
  4. Analyse the multiple and complex impacts of family violence on individuals, families and the broader community.
  5. Apply contemporary approaches to assess and support responses to family violence.

Workload

You should expect to spend 20-24 hours per week on this unit to achieve the learning outcomes: • 5-6 hours self-directed learning journeys • 4-5 hours readings or activities • 7-8 hours skills-based assessment tasks Each week there will be an optional Zoom session.
