Overview

RAD1012 develops foundational scientific, professional, and clinical radiographic knowledge essential for you to progress along the Novice to Expert continuum. The unit extends radiographic expertise, enabling safe performance of examinations related to the respiratory system, shoulder and pelvic girdles, vertebral column, bony thorax, and plain abdomen. Building upon earlier principles of professional practice, RAD1012 introduces the science necessary for advanced radiographic equipment operation. You will also study radiation dosimetry and safety, ensuring competent operation and performance measurement of diagnostic ionising radiation equipment. Clinical exposure under supervision allows you to apply these principles across a range of indicated examinations.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the statutory regulations governing the safe use of ionising radiation for patient, staff and the public, including dose measurement and monitoring.
  2. Explain the biological response of organs to ionising radiation and how to manage the biological risk associated with radiation exposure.
  3. Define the various quantities of radiation exposure, dose and dose-area product, and perform dosimetric calculations using the correct units.
  4. Apply your knowledge of the impact of x-ray beam properties on image quality factors of an x-ray image.
  5. Summarise the theoretical principles underpinning the operation of automatic exposure control systems and digital radiographic imaging systems.
  6. Apply observation and interviewing skills to provide holistic patient care.
  7. Recognise the social, cultural and ethical needs encountered in clinical practice.
  8. Describe and justify the correct radiographic technique, accounting for clinical presentation, for radiographic imaging of the chest, shoulder and pelvic girdles, the vertebral column, and abdomen.
  9. Apply knowledge and skills to analyse x-ray images and solve imaging challenges associated with patient positioning and image quality.
  10. Distinguish between normal radiographic anatomical features and pathological features on x-ray images.
  11. Identify when appropriate further and supplementary imaging is required to answer the clinical question.
  12. Describe and demonstrate safe radiographic imaging of the chest, shoulder and pelvic girdles, the vertebral column, and abdomen.

Workload

4 x one hour lectures, 3 x one hour tutorials, 1 x two hour laboratory practical session, 10 hours clinical practice per week.
