The focus of this unit is mobile imaging, trauma imaging, paediatrics, geriatrics and radiography of the head, including dental. It also facilitates the ongoing development of broader general radiographic skills of the appendicular and axial skeleton. Additionally, the unit provides you with the essential elements of imaging of the vascular, gastrointestinal, genito-urinary and hepato-biliary systems with the emphasis upon digital fluoroscopic systems. The professional role of the radiographer in managing these systems and implementing the procedures is addressed.

Learning outcomes
- Explain the physical principles underpinning mobile x-ray systems and apply them in clinical situations to produce and evaluate imaging;
- Explain the physical principles underpinning digital fluoroscopic imaging systems and the physics of fluid flow, image intensifiers and planar conventional tomography and apply them in clinical situations to produce and evaluate images of the vascular, gastrointestinal, genito-urinary and hepatobiliary systems;
- Implement and evaluate appropriate quality control measures in relation to mobile x-ray systems and digital fluoroscopic imaging systems;
- Implement and evaluate appropriate radiation safety strategies and radiation protection measures in the context of mobile and fluoroscopic examinations;
- Evaluate exposure protocols for all general and contrast radiographic imaging in terms of image quality and radiation protection for patients;
- Describe and demonstrate radiographic skills required for imaging of vascular, gastrointestinal, genito-urinary and hepato-biliary systems and head;
- Describe and demonstrate radiographic skills required for imaging paediatric and adult patients, particularly in emergency and mobile examinations;
- Collaborate with patients and other health professionals to achieve positive patient outcomes;
- Respond to the challenges posed by patients with particular needs to provide effective and safe care to them while they undergo imaging examinations;
- Comprehend and apply the fundamental concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Workload
This unit has the equivalent of 18 hours of teacher directed study per week. This includes a mix of teaching and learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, practical activities and clinical placement hours. There is an equivalent expectation of 18 hours of self directed study each week.
