RAD5506 · Magnetic resonance imaging: Advanced imaging techniques
2026 Handbook6 credit pointsLevel 5Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences
Last checked: 23 Aug 2026 UTCOverview
This unit extends knowledge of the basic physical principles and imaging methods of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to include the MRI imaging techniques associated with cardiac and cardiovascular imaging, diffusion, perfusion and susceptibility weighted imaging. Clinical indications and the preparation of the patient including positioning methods for these advanced techniques will be addressed. Sequence adaptations required to conform to clinical presentation, along with modifications to equipment will be considered. The unit will conclude with an examination of the application of quality assurance principles to advanced MR imaging.

Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate safety in the MRI environment by applying advanced physical principles.
- Explain the principles of advanced MRI techniques within the context of evidence-based practice.
- Apply advanced cardiovascular techniques, protocols, and post-processing approaches for both clinical and research applications.
- Assess and effectively communicate findings related to pathology from cardiovascular, perfusion, and diffusion studies.
- Modify standard MRI scanning techniques and accurately differentiate between cardiac and vascular structures.
- Identify ongoing professional development needs in MRI imaging.
