This unit is designed to introduce aspiring scientists to the principles of laboratory and risk management, with a focus on your responsibilities as future experts and supervisors. It explores key legislative framework and the duties of both employers and employees in areas such as occupational health and safety; the handling of dangerous goods and the analysis, treatment and disposal of hazardous materials. Emphasis is placed on the assessment and management of these risks within a laboratory settings. The unit is delivered through programmed learning material and course work, including the evaluation and discussion of real-world case studies.

Learning outcomes
- Discuss selected issues involved in the effective management of a scientific laboratory including personnel, equipment and resource planning;
- Apply relevant legislation and standards, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act to laboratory practices;
- Identify hazards associated with chemical and biological materials, laboratory instruments ionising radiation and evaluate the risks they pose;
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and propose safe working procedures to minimise potential hazards;
- Outline legislated requirements for the recycling and disposal of hazardous materials, and recommend appropriate procedures for the analysis and treatment of such wastes prior to environmental disposal;
- Apply foundational principles from chemistry, biology, microbiology and physical science to the treatment and management of hazardous materials.
Workload
