Overview
You will learn about (developmental) language disorders in children, including their characteristics, risk factors, and impact on learning and participation. You will develop skills to assess language development, interpret findings, and plan evidence-based interventions. You will integrate theory with practical application through case studies that support your clinical reasoning. Emphasis is placed on culturally responsive and safe practice, family-centred care, and collaboration with educators. This unit builds on your foundational knowledge and prepares you for clinical work with children experiencing developmental language difficulties.

- Explain the characteristics, risk factors, possible aetiology, and impacts of developmental language disorders in infants and adolescents.
- Apply appropriate tools and procedures to assess language development in children and adolescents.
- Analyse and interpret assessment findings to identify developmental language difficulties.
- Develop and implement evidence-informed interventions for children with developmental language disorders.
- Apply culturally safe, responsive, person-centred, and family-centred approaches in language intervention.
- Describe and apply collaborative practices when working with educators and other professionals to support children with language difficulties.
Workload
6 hours of teacher-directed study per week, including 1 hour of lectures, 3 hours of online learning activities, and 2 hours of workshops. 6 hours per week of self-directed study. Total per week = 12 hours
