Overview

This unit provides a strong foundation in calculus tailored to the needs of technology-driven fields. You will study essential topics including functions, limits, vector algebra, differentiation and integration, exponential and logarithmic functions, polar coordinates, complex numbers, series, and functions of several variables, including partial derivatives and multiple integrals. The unit emphasises hands-on learning, encouraging you to apply calculus concepts to practical problems through worked examples and computational exercises. By connecting theoretical knowledge with industry-relevant applications, this unit helps you develop the mathematical tools and critical thinking skills needed for innovation in your chosen specialisation.

Requisites

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply fundamental concepts of functions, limits, differentiation, and integration to analyse and solve practical problems in technology and engineering contexts.
  2. Model and interpret real-world systems relevant to sustainable technologies using vector algebra, exponential and logarithmic functions, polar coordinates, and complex numbers.
  3. Perform multivariable calculus operations, including partial derivatives and multiple integrals, to evaluate and optimise systems involving multiple interacting variables.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in using computational tools and mathematical reasoning to solve applied calculus problems and communicate solutions effectively in engineering and technological applications.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
