Requisites

The Handbook lists no prerequisite, corequisite or prohibition for this unit.

Learning outcomes

  1. Explain fundamental electrical and electronic principles, including voltage, current, resistance, power, and the operation of basic electronic components (e.g., resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors).
  2. Analyse simple DC and AC circuits using appropriate laws and theorems (Ohm’s law, Kirchhoff’s laws, etc.) and apply these to solve engineering problems.
  3. Explain the functionality of semiconductor devices and basic digital logic systems in engineering applications.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in using basic laboratory equipment (ex: multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies etc) to construct, test, and troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuits.
  5. Apply electrical and electronic concepts to real-world problems in energy systems, automation, and technology solutions, showing an awareness of safety and sustainability considerations.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
