Overview

This unit provides a foundational understanding of the principles of statics and dynamics as they relate to the design and analysis of vehicle structures. You will explore key concepts including forces, moments, equilibrium, stress, strain, and deformation under static conditions, as well as the dynamic behaviour of vehicle components subjected to motion, vibration, acceleration, and impact forces. The unit emphasises the application of mechanical principles to evaluate structural performance, stability, and safety within modern vehicle systems. Through analytical exercises and practical engineering applications, you will learn to assess the structural integrity and performance of vehicles, with particular consideration for lightweight construction methods and sustainable materials. By integrating theoretical knowledge with real-world design challenges, this unit equips you with the analytical and problem-solving skills required to develop safe, efficient, and durable vehicle structures that meet both performance expectations and environmental standards.

Requisites

The Handbook lists no prerequisite, corequisite or prohibition for this unit.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply principles of statics to solve engineering problems involving forces, moments, and equilibrium in vehicle structures.
  2. Analyse stress, strain, and deformation in structural components using appropriate analytical models.
  3. Evaluate the dynamic response of vehicle structures under varying loading conditions, including vibration and impact.
  4. Use simulation software and experimental methods to assess the structural performance and integrity of vehicle components.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
