Overview

This unit addresses the design of specific urban sites, integrating systems like energy, water, and waste management in a way that is responsive to larger city-scale frameworks. You will focus on creating self-sustaining sites that acknowledge their connection to broader urban networks, balancing localised solutions with system-wide efficiency and resilience.

Requisites

Learning outcomes

1. Critically reflect on and practise ethical approaches to contemporary urban design;
2. Apply skills in urban design and research to address urban design issues;
3. Strategically respond to complex problems related to sustainable urban development and city-making practises by leveraging relevant contemporary technologies with increasing skill;
4. Effectively communicate design ideas and proposals through visual presentations, models, and reports, using clear and persuasive design language;
5. Work collaboratively in a studio setting, incorporating feedback to refine and iterate design experiments toward a final proposal.

Workload

12 hours per week including 3 contact hours. The remaining 9 hours are to be used for self and group learning activities.
