The Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours) includes all the elements of the Bachelor of Science, together with formal training in leadership and persuasive communication, and hands-on practice in transforming an idea into a business or social enterprise. Fundamental to the course is an in-depth exploration of the big issues of our time. You will explore approaches and pathways to potential solutions, and think deeply about the qualities underpinning effective leadership and how to implement change. In your final year, you will partner with an external organisation and tackle a problem of real world significance. The course includes an internship - either domestic or international - that provides an experience of the world of work. This course is breaking new ground in science education in Australia. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to develop professional relationships and mentors with the science faculty alumni and the broader community. As a graduate of this course you will have access to all the traditional careers of science honours graduates, and also be well prepared for further studies. You will enter the workforce equipped to grow into a leader capable of exploiting science to address complex challenges. You will have the necessary knowledge and skills to be attractive to top management consultancies, businesses and institutions. Whatever path you decide to take, you will be able to use your broad-based training, learning and experiences as a launch pad to making significant contributions to improving the human condition.
Structure
You must complete 192 credit points as specified in the course requirements, including: a maximum of 60 credit points at level 1, of which at least 42 credit points must be science units; and a minimum of 36 credit points at level 4 or higher; and a minimum of 24 credit points at level 3 and 24 credit points at level 4 or higher required for this course or your science major. Furthermore, you must complete 126 credit points of science studies over Part A and Part B, including: a minimum of 42 credit points at Level 1; and a minimum of 72 credit points at Levels 2 and 3, of which at least 30 credit points must be at Level 3. Note 1: This course is intended to be taken on a full-time basis, and as such a full-time study load will ensure you have a better cohort experience. Note 2: Academic requirement: To remain in the course you are required to maintain at least a distinction average (70%) across all units in each calendar year. If you do not achieve this average you will be required to transfer to S2000 Bachelor of Science. Note 3: You will complete an internship whilst enrolled in SCI3501 Impact through Science 3A (6 points). You should complete this before commencement of semester two in the third year of the course. Note 4: Progression requirement: In order to progress to the fourth year of studies, you must have completed 144 credit points, including the 36 credit points of Impact science studies. You must also achieve a minimum of a distinction average (70%) in 18 credit points of level 3 units in your major studies and the level 3 Impact science studies. If you successfully complete the first three years (144 points) of the course but do not meet the academic standard for progression to the fourth year, you will graduate with the Bachelor of Science. The course progression map provides guidance on unit enrolment for each semester of study. Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.
You must complete 72 credit points comprising: - one major and one minor from the list below, or - one extended major from the list below. A major consists of eight units (48 credit points), comprising: a maximum of two units at Level 1 (12 credit points), and a minimum of three Level 3 units (8 credit points) A minor consists of four units (24 credit points), comprising: a minimum of two units at Level 1 (12 credit points) An extended major consists of twelve units (72 credit points), comprising: a maximum of three units at Level 1 (18 credit points), and a minimum of four units at Level 3 (24 credit points) Note 1: If you wish to complete two majors, you will need to utilise 24 credit points from Part B to meet the requirements of your second major. Note 2: A maximum of 12 credit points can be counted toward any combination of majors, extended majors and minors. Note 3: The Psychology extended major (APAC accredited level 1 sequence of units) is only offered in the single degree Bachelor of Science (S2000) or in the double degree Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts (S2006). The Psychology extended major (APAC accredited level 1 sequence of units) is required if you intend to progress to honours in Psychology. Refer to the science listed areas of study below for units required for your chosen major, extended major or minor. Minors, majors and extended majors Refer also to the table of minors, majors and extended majors by campus which also details if an area of study is available as a minor, major or extended major.
You must complete nine units (54 credit points), comprising: - one Core studies unit (6 credit points); - two units of Additional science studies (12 credit points); and - six units of Impact science studies (36 credit points) Although the requirements in Part B appear to exceed 54 credit points, units completed as part of your chosen major (Part A) do not count towards this Part.
Your elective studies may be chosen from units available in the Bachelor of Science course to broaden your science knowledge or to extend your major. Elective units may also be taken from non-science disciplines as long as you have the prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolment in the units. You cannot take SCI1000 within this course.
In your final year you must complete the following units
