Overview

You will be required to conduct a comprehensive and detailed, in-depth critical review of literature relevant to your scientific research topic; identify a ‘research gap’ in the current literature; derive research questions or hypotheses (whichever is applicable) for testing; write a report, showing due regard to relevant stylistic conventions.

Learning outcomes

1. develop the ability to conduct and manage a planned study
2. apply critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills in activities dealing with a scientific research project
3. critique relevant research and use this to write a comprehensive literature review on a chosen scientific research topic
4. defend the identification of a ‘research gap’ in current literature and propose hypotheses or research questions for testing.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
