Overview

You will be required to apply critical, analytical, practical and scientific research skills through undertaking original and independent research, whilst ensuring application of ethical consideration and the principles of scientific methods are adhered to; manage problems that arise during data collection; apply your chosen research methodology and design to test your research questions or hypotheses (whichever is applicable); conduct appropriate analysis of the data; draw conclusions from the findings; and identify limitations arising from the study and directions for future research. You are required to write a report detailing findings from this whilst showing due regard to relevant stylistic conventions.

Learning outcomes

  1. identify practical problems associated with conducting scientific research and propose solutions to overcome these problems
  2. apply critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills in individual activities dealing with a scientific research project
  3. develop and demonstrate analytical skills in accounting research and interpret the empirical results correctly
  4. write a scientific research report that details data collection, application of the chosen research methodology and design to test the research questions or hypotheses (whichever is applicable), results and analyses, robustness checks and/or additional tests (if applicable), conclusions, limitations of the study and directions for future research.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
