The Extended realities (XR) lab is a multi-disciplinary learning environment where students from the different specialisations in the Bachelor of Media Communication come together to investigate new media technologies, production skills and practices. The unit takes a broad approach to Extended Reality (XR) to explore practices of Virtual and Alternative Reality media, as well as other emergent media practice technologies such as Generative AI and Virtual Production. Throughout the semester you will devise and produce an extended or emerging media project that explores and tests the capabilities of emergent media production technologies. The lab will foster yours creativity and experimentation in media production while also supporting you to developing professional skills in collaboration and adaptability.

Learning outcomes
- identify and discuss the communicative and creative role of extended reality concepts and technologies in contemporary emergent media environments;
- display proficiency in a variety of XR (such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality) and other emergent media skills and practices;
- work reflectively, independently and collaboratively with peers to conceptualise and design an XR or emergent media project;
- apply skills to an XR or emergent media production that critically reflects on the evolving technologies and practices of extended reality or other emergent medias.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
