The unit begins with a series of topics that focus on the general overview of cellular metabolism in biochemistry. This is followed by understanding the structures, functions as well as chemical properties of important biomolecules that involve lipid and protein. Finally, a comprehensive study on the lipid and protein cellular metabolism which include the generation of energy from these two major dietary components from daily diet are conducted.

Learning outcomes
- Describe what cellular metabolism is and how it affects our life in general;
- Differentiate the basic structures and chemical properties of lipid and protein, and access how these properties influence their biological functions;
- Examine the mechanisms of storage and processing of lipid and protein;
- Critically evaluate the mechanisms for control of metabolic reaction sequences involving lipid and protein;
- Foster teamwork, demonstrate advanced laboratory skills, and communicate research observations/findings in the form of written reports and presentations.
Workload
• Two hours of online pre-recorded lectures; • Seven-eight hours of independent study; • One-hour tutorial session and • Six 3-hour practical sessions per week.
