This unit explores current curriculum contexts and contemporary trends in the teaching and learning of Health and Physical Education (HPE). You will develop your curriculum and pedagogical knowledge to support primary school students with developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the pursuit of lifelong physical activity, as well as physical, mental and social health and wellbeing. The unit provides opportunities for you to critically analyse and engage with HPE curriculum, assessment and pedagogy in the primary years, and apply this knowledge to your practice. The wellbeing of learners in a variety of educational and community settings is examined.

Requisites
Learning outcomes
- critically analyse health and physical education curriculum and practice
- demonstrate the capacity to use curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge to design learning sequences and lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate for primary years
- understand and utilise a variety of physical education specific pedagogies such as fundamental motor skills, sport education, thematics and game-centred approaches, that promote physically educative experiences
- understand and apply concepts and information about health and wellbeing education such as emotional and social health, drug education, and sexuality education
- identify strategies that support the engagement of diverse learners in health and physical education.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
