Overview

This unit builds on EDF5155 Languages education in the secondary years A. It extends your knowledge, understandings and skills in languages education. You will draw on research literature to develop an understanding of learning strategies in order to build effective practices to inform your teaching in second language competencies. This unit critically examines a range of contemporary curriculum and pedagogical innovations in languages education, including the use of digital technologies, second language literacies, critical inquiry and action research projects. Through further examination of a range of national and international languages and education policies, you will investigate and evaluate theoretical and practical links between disciplines, domains and literacies in order to better appreciate the importance of communication and how languages contribute to this educative process. Working collaboratively and independently, you will consolidate your content knowledge, develop pedagogical knowledge and skills enabling you to provide solutions to complex educational challenges in secondary schools.

Learning outcomes

  1. develop, design, and research curriculum, lessons, and units of work for senior languages education
  2. consolidate professional knowledge and critically evaluate second language teaching practices, policy, and assessment frameworks
  3. reflect on and assess teaching experiences to enhance professional practice and effectiveness in second language education
  4. critically analyse curriculum and pedagogical innovations to inform best practices in language education
  5. engage in professional learning and research to address contemporary challenges in language education.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
