This unit builds on coursework undertaken in EDF5163 Media education in the secondary years A. You will continue to examine and demonstrate different approaches to teaching and researching key media topics with a focus on the VCE Media study design. Through critical engagement with educational literature, you will engage with media theoretical concepts and pedagogical issues. This unit provides opportunities to experience current media arts exhibitions/resources with a view to plan for and assess VCE Media. Media narratives are examined with a specific focus on the Australian context which includes Indigenous media arts perspectives and issues, representation, narrative, new media and media production. This unit offers a focus on senior secondary assessment tasks, unit development and curriculum.

Learning outcomes
- develop your understanding of the scope and purpose of teaching VCE media arts
- understand and critically evaluate pedagogical approaches to teaching and assessing media arts
- identify, evaluate and use a variety of resources for teaching media studies across VCE Media
- demonstrate production skills and understanding of production processes relevant to teaching media arts at Year 11 and Year 12 that include considerations of students of diverse backgrounds and abilities
- address Indigenous media arts perspectives and issues
- understand the ethical, safety and legal issues associated with the teaching of media arts in secondary schools and demonstrate procedures that respond to these issues.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
