In this unit you will be introduced to general pathology, that is the molecular and cellular mechanisms of human disease, their classification, and the process of progression. You will study a broad range of topics including cellular pathology and inflammation, immunopathology and infectious disease, neoplasia, blood disorders, haemodynamic disorders, obesity and diabetes. Through the study of these specific diseases, you will develop a broad appreciation of pathological processes that lead to the onset and outcomes of human disease. This unit will give you a strong knowledge base in human pathology before moving on to study diseases in organ systems, outlined in HUP3022. You will communicate your comprehension of human pathology through both written and oral methodologies.

Learning outcomes
- Explain the pathological processes involved in the development of diseases, including the impact of acute and chronic stimuli on normal tissue function;
- Identify and distinguish between the various molecular, cellular and tissue changes associated with disease pathogenesis;
- Interpret pathology based data to differentiate between the different disease processes;
- Evaluate diagnostic tools for their potential to differentiate between disease processes;
- Research and interpret evidence-based pathology in order to communicate the processes driving disease.
Workload
• One 2-hour tutorial per week; • 2 hours of lectures (recorded material) per week; • 3 hours of laboratories (for 8 weeks) and • 6 hours of independent study per week (including pre-class preparation and completion of assessment tasks).
