In this unit you will adopt a systematic approach to the study of human pathology, which examines individual organ systems. You will learn about the aetiology (causes), clinical presentation, diagnosis, and sequelae (consequences) of human diseases as they affect tissue structures in essential organ systems. Some of the major themes that you will cover in this unit include vasculopathy, neuropathology, haematopathology, gastrointestinal pathology and oncology. Through laboratory classes and workshops you will learn to distinguish pathological changes present in disease and their relationship to organ dysfunction. You will write laboratory and pathology reports with an emphasis on the environmental, molecular, and clinical aspects of disease pathogenesis and the role of laboratory investigations in the diagnosis of specific diseases

Learning outcomes
- Explain how pathological conditions alter organ structure and function in human disease;
- Generate and evaluate pathology-based data to discriminate pathological changes present in a range of human diseases;
- Distinguish between different modes of disease pathogenesis and appraise how they may be therapeutically modified;
- Evaluate pathology-based and clinical data to determine a diagnosis;
- Research and interpret evidence-based pathology in order to diagnose and explain human disease.
Workload
• 3 hours of laboratories (for 8 weeks); • One 2-hour tutorial; • 2 hours of lectures (recorded material) and • 6 hours of independent study per week.
