This unit will provide an overview of the foundations of learning analytics – general issues, definitions, challenges, critical issues, relationships with other fields. The unit will examine and critically appraise the interdisciplinary nature of learning analytics. The unit will also critically discuss connections between the three critical dimensions of learning analytics – data analytics, design, and theory. The process of data analysis along with selected data analysis techniques commonly used in learning analytics will be introduced. The unit will consider how learning analytics can be used for personalisation and decision-making. Ethical use of data and privacy protection will be explored.

- Review and assess emerging trends and tools in learning analytics
- Explain and appraise ethical and privacy implications in adoption of learning analytics
- Develop a detailed plan for learning analytics implementation and critically assess its main elements
