Overview

The unit is focused on human factors in learning analytics. The unit will introduce approaches to designing systems and user interfaces in learning analytics. The emphasis will be given to the approaches that promote ethical, equitable, and inclusive participation of relevant stakeholders throughout different phases of development and implementation of learning analytics. The unit will explore relevant techniques and tools for design, evaluation, and critical appraisal of systems, user interfaces, learner experiences in learning analytics, and data storytelling. The unit will also cover value-sensitive design and education practice. Particular importance will be given to human-in-the-loop approaches for the use of data science approaches in learning analytics and that are informed by the learning sciences.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify and appraise methods and tools that can be used to include educational stakeholders in the design of learning analytics innovations
  2. Evaluate data visualisation and narrative approaches to communicate learning analytics insights
  3. Develop a detailed plan for engaging educational stakeholders in the learning analytics design process
  4. Formulate and design learning analytics interface prototypes tailored to educational stakeholders’ needs
