Overview
This unit introduces you to Australian environmental and land use regulation. It develops and integrates legal knowledge from a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields (e.g. constitutional and administrative law, international law, and torts; environmental science, and geography), augmenting this knowledge through study of specific legislation and case law. The unit addresses the philosophical and Indigenous understandings of place, and environmental and landscape values and principles, structures of environmental governance and modes of environmental and planning regulation. The unit will cover topics including environmental federalism, environmental impact assessment, pollution control, environmental planning, heritage protection, and biodiversity conservation.

Learning outcomes
- Assess the evolution of environmental law and the interdisciplinary factors driving change and directing decision-making about the environment.
- Analyse and explain the values and principles underpinning current environmental and land use law approaches, including the acknowledgement of Indigenous knowledges and experiences.
- Apply environmental and planning law and theories to contemporary case studies.
- Critically reflect on regulatory approaches for addressing environmental problems and landscape modification concerns.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
