Overview

Increasing numbers of women experience chronic and acute illness during their pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Consequently, midwives need to know how to manage high-acuity situations and advanced interventions. The aim of this unit is to extend your knowledge and skills to confidently and competently care for women with complex midwifery needs. This unit comprises theoretical and clinical requirements. Emphasising evidence-based approaches, this unit will extend your ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate midwifery and pharmacological interventions for women with complex disease states. This unit also explores the role of the complex care midwife in contemporary maternity care provision, quality improvement priorities to improve the safety and quality of care, and the legal and ethical frameworks for the provision of safe, woman-centred complex midwifery care. You will learn about the importance of interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, and supporting and advocating for women with complex care needs.
