Overview

In this unit you will explore the key principles and concepts of health that inform the frameworks guiding disease prevention. You will develop an understanding of: health and illness; global and population health; social determinants of health, environmental impacts on health; therapeutic communication and cultural safety; health promotion and health screening. This will provide a foundation for you to explore and reflect on the provision of health care to underserved populations and nursing in a culturally diverse community.

Learning outcomes

  1. Critically evaluate the concepts of planetary, global, and public health and their impact on nursing practice.
  2. Analyse the impact of globalisation on human health, considering social, economic, and political factors.
  3. Critically analyse health care systems, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement in health care delivery.
  4. Analyse the factors contributing to health inequities for priority populations, and evaluate strategies to improve access to healthcare and equitable service provision.
  5. Evaluate the influence of the social determinants of health, and review global and local strategies to improve health and equity outcomes.
  6. Critically evaluate and appraise the role of health literacy, health promotion, and population screening in primary healthcare.
  7. Demonstrate practice at a beginning level in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice, Code of conduct for nurses and the International Council of Nurses Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  8. Apply evidence-based research and show how planetary, global and public health impact healthcare delivery.

Workload

17 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, interprofessional learning (IPL) and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
