In this clinically focussed medical-surgical nursing practice unit, you will build upon the concepts introduced in NUR5111 Contemporary Nursing Practice 1. You will explore pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, pharmacology, associated microbiology and nursing care associated with a range of common health conditions. The clinical practice component will provide you with opportunities to incorporate your theoretical learning into clinical practice.

Learning outcomes
- Apply knowledge of the pathophysiology of common conditions to the nursing care of clients in medical-surgical settings.
- Demonstrate safe, evidence based and person-centred clinical nursing practice relevant to medical-surgical setting.
- Describe the nursing application of diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative techniques associated with caring for the medical-surgical patient.
- Critically reflect upon, and evaluate self-performance in terms of the delivery of quality nursing care.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of common health problems for the patient in the acute medical-surgical setting.
- Apply pharmacological knowledge to support the safe medication management of patients with an acute illness.
- Develop and implement patient centred nursing care appropriate to the needs and wishes of the patient and their family/carer, regardless of race, age, gender, culture, sexual orientation, disability or other diverse needs.
- Demonstrate practice at a beginning level in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice, Code of conduct for nurses and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Code of ethics for nurses.
Workload
9 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, clinical learning environments and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
